Syrup Tasting Notes
Sugarmaker Story

Little Charlie's Fancy Grade

This Fancy is incredibly elegant: Fruity floral aromas are backed by confectioner's sugar, clover honey and a lingering sweetness that reveals a subtle hint of toast imparted from a wood-fired arch.

Little Charlie's Grade A Medium Amber

Soft, smooth, and light. Delightful toasty vanilla and raw marshmallow notes are underlayed by a caramel minerality that seems to stay on the tongue for ages.

Vermont Map

Not too far down the road from Jay Peak, Little Charlie’s Sugarbush sits at the end of an unnamed road off of another unnamed road. The ancient looking stacked-rock walls immediately hint at previous generations’ use of the sugarbush, and the pile of old sap buckets confirms that David Schurman is not the first one to make maple syrup here. In operation since 2007, Little Charlie’s Sugarbush sits on the site of an old sugaring operation. The sugarhouse is brand new, with the majority of the wood in the building coming from the property. Although it is only a few minutes from the main road, this sugarhouse feels isolated, off alone in the Vermont woods.

The neatly organized tubing snakes its way through this sugarbush’s fairly young trees on its way to the holding tanks. This is moose country, and Dave will tell you that the worst thing that can happen is to have a scared moose running through the woods, tearing down tubing. If he can keep the moose away, he still has to brave the deepest snows in Vermont to make it to his sugarhouse when the sap starts to run. However, he is not always alone in the sugarhouse- His daughter Charlie is always eager to do quality control and make sure that his syrup is up to snuff.
